Songs for change

THE GROOVY CHANGE CORNER – a song can change the world There is no change possible without communication. And there is no communication like through a song or a poem. What better than a song to change the world? Many poets and musicians have addressed the need to change the world from an environmental point of view. We have selected some of these songs and poems, as well as inserted some of our own. If you know of any others please share them with us in the comment box!

The following lists songs with a socio-environmental message by international artists, some of them specifically focused on climate change issues. Click on the link to hear the song and watch the video (most are without commercials!), and read the (licenced) lyrics. As lyrics are copyright protected we can not post them directly, but instead we provide links to legal lyrics websites so the artists get their rightful penny.

If you know of any good environmental protest songs please drop us a line. We reserve the right not to publish genuinely cheesy environmental protest songs (even from well regarded musicians), unless they are very obviously ironic or pun intended. However, we have written some quite cheesy environmental protest songs ourselves that we publish below. The difference is why…

        Passion
Lyrics adapted from David Bowie´s “Fashion”. Click to listen to the original tune.

        There´s a massive global problem
        but its not very clear
        do people from rich homes
        pretend that they care?
        It´s big and its bad
        and its spreading fresh fear
They reduce over there but we don’t do it here

        [CHORUS]

        Passion! Turn to the north
        Passion! Turn to the south
        Oooh, passion!
        We are the change squad
        And we’re coming to frown
        Beep-beep
        Beep-beep

Reason with me – don’t reason with me
Walk with me – don’t walk with me
Trade with me – don’t trade with me, no
        Beep-beep

        There’s a brand new buzz
But it won´t make us cheer
will this talk about green growth
        bring sustainable years?
It’s just loud and it´s tasteless
        I’ve condemned it before
        You fool us while consuming
        down to Mother Earth´s core
        Oh bop, passion

        [repeat CHORUS]

Reason with me – don’t reason with me
Walk with me – don’t walk with me
Trade with me – don’t trade with me, no
        Beep-beep

Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
        Pa-pa-pa-pa-passion
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
        Pa-pa-pa-pa-passion
La-la la la la la la-la

        Changing me changing you
Lyrics adapted from Abba´s “Knowing me, knowing you” Click to listen to the original tune, careful, dangerously cheesy clip!

        No more carefree power…
        Renewables ever after…
Walking through an empty plant, tears in my eyes!
Here is where the story ends, this is goodbye

        [CHORUS]

Changing me, changing you, ah haa
There is so much we can do
Changing me, changing you, ah haa
We just have to change it, this time its due
(this time its due, this time its due
this time its due, its really due)
Breaking habits is never easy, I know, but we have to now
(I have to show this time
I have to show, this time I know)
        Changing me, changing you
        Or else we are through

Mem’ries (mem’ries), good days (good days), bad days (bad days)
They’ll be (they’ll be), with me (with me) always (always)
In these old familiar shales, fracking we´d play
Now there’s no more dash for gas, nothing to pay

        repeat [CHORUS] and fade
